Continuously operated portable automated lidar (PAL): boundary layer observations in Chiba, Japan using automatic alignment system

A continuously operated portable automated lidar (PAL) is used to monitor the troposphere. The PAL system uses an automatic alignment procedure to routinely optimize the lidar alignment in a definite interval. Consequently, we demonstrate the capability of the system to detect atmospheric phenomena based from the data gathered from January 2003 to January 2004. The automatic alignment procedure implemented on the system will be discussed.
