KMITL donates GNSS receivers to DSD, marks start of collaboration

The Data and Sensor Development (DSD) Laboratory welcomed colleagues from the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) who visited the Manila Observatory on 15-16 May 2025. Their visit marks the beginning of the two institutions’ research collaboration on space weather, earthquake precursors, and upper atmosphere research. The KMITL also kindly donated two Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers which they discussed how to deploy.

During their visit, Dr. Prasert Kenpankho delivered a presentation on Earthquake-Based Space Weather where he discussed how space weather conditions are influenced by seismic activity and further explored what they can collaborate on. The rest of the KMITL team provided an overview of GNSS receivers to the DSD laboratory, covering their components, installation procedures, and programming.

The two donated GNSS instruments were officially labeled as PH-MM (Philippines – Metro Manila) and PH-DV (Philippines – Davao). PH-MM was initially installed on the rooftop of the Ionosphere Building; later on, it was relocated to the rooftop of the main building due to signal interference issues. Meanwhile, PH-DV is scheduled for installation at MO Davao on the first week of June 2025.

The Manila Observatory looks forward to the research collaboration with the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and is grateful for their donation.
