The Manila Observatory’s research initiative, Creating Markers for Detecting Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD) in Coastal Communities in the Philippines (La Union), has been featured as a contributing case study in a technical paper onNon-Economic Losses (NELs). This paper was developed by the Expert Group on NELs under the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage associated with Climate Change Impacts (WIM Executive Committee). The case study was highlighted in the section on Non-Economic Losses to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (NELs-BES).
The Manila Observatory, through its Klima Center, aims to identify elements of Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD) in coastal communities, with a focus on certain areas in the northern province of La Union, Philippines. Through carefully conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) with mangrove farmers and fisherfolk, qualitative data was collected and rigorously reviewed to address the significant knowledge gap in NELD research in the country.
